General Information

Founded in 1703, St. Petersburg is the largest city in Russia, second only to Moscow. Located on the 60th parallel in the Northwestern region of Russia, St. Petersburg is the world’s largest most northern city and the largest city in Europe that is not a capital. St. Petersburg benefits from direct flights to 102 international destinations, including to major hubs. It is only 1h10m away by plane and 3h45m by speed train from Moscow, with 60 flights and 15 trains daily. Speed trains (4 daily) also run from Helsinki and will get you to St. Petersburg in 3h27m. Still, bear in mind that September is relatively high season in St. Petersburg that is why we encourage you to book your travel options in advance. Known as the cultural capital of Russia, St. Petersburg boasts 221 museums, more than 80 theatres, 100 concert venues, 45 art galleries and exhibition halls, and etc. The city hosts around 100 festivals and competitions annually, of which more than 50 are international. The historical centre of St. Petersburg, as well as the palaces in the vicinity are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Please be advised that tickets to major museums and theatres normally need to be booked well in advance. Please refer to this file to get more information about the event.

Transfers

Transfers will be provided on your arrival to St. Petersburg and will get you to the recommended hotels from Pulkovo Airport and Moskovsky railway station. Please make sure to update your registration form once you know, whether or not you will need an inbound transfer. Kindly note that we will not be organizing the outbound transfers and delegates shall make their own arrangements through hotel reception or by using mobile apps such as Yandex Taxi, Gett or Uber Russia.

We will also provide transfers to the social events venues each day. 

TRANSFERS FROM THE AIRPORT AND THE RAILWAY STATION

Transfers will be provided upon your arrival to St. Petersburg and will get you only to the recommended hotels from Pulkovo Airport and Moskovsky Railway station.

Please mind that transfers will be arranged for the delegates arriving within the period from September 16th to September 19th.

Our volunteers will meet you at the information stand at Pulkovo Airport and help you with transportation arrangements.

Delegates arriving by train to Moskovsky Railway station will be greeted by our volunteers at the platform where the train arrives.

Please mind that transfers will be provided only to those delegates who submitted their arrival flights/ trains data by September 11th. We may not be able to provide transfers to those, who failed to update their flights/trains information in time.

If you stay in the hotel which is not on the recommended hotels list please walk up to our volunteers and they will assist you in ordering a taxi.

Kindly note that we will not be organizing the outbound transfers. Delegates may make their own arrangements through the hotel reception or by using mobile apps such as “Yandex Taxi”, “Gett” or “Uber Russia”. Please be informed that you should download “Uber Russia” (not Uber) to use it in St. Petersburg.

Saint-Petersburg City tour (Half day tour, 4h)

This tour will give you an opportunity to admire the most famous monuments-symbols of the city like St. Isaac’s and Kazan Cathedrals, buildings of Senate and Synod, the Peter and Paul fortress, the Spit of the Basil island, Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, Mikhailovsky castle, Summer garden and others.

During the tour you will have several stops: Cruiser “Aurora”, Saint Isaac’s Cathedral & the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island.

Hermitage (Half day tour, 4h)

On this tour you will visit one of the biggest art museums of the world going through a maze of corridors and halls of 4 buildings of the Hermitage museum and a splendid lobby of the Hermitage theatre in addition. They are connected via passages, so you won’t notice when you are in or out. Starting from former residence of Russian Royal family Winter palace where you will see Throne hall, Ball room we will continue with Renaissance art like Da Vinci, Rafael, Michelangelo. We won’t miss a great collection of Rembrandts paintings for sure. Afterwards if you are not exhausted we will go to the General Staff Building to see a wonderful collection of Impressionists and Post-Impressionists like Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse.

Peter and Paul’s Fortress

This excursion introduces the history of the construction of the Peter and Paul Fortress and tells about the importance of the fortress for the naissance and initial construction of St. Petersburg. The Peter and Paul Fortress is presented as a first-class military fortification of the first years of the 18th century, the first architectural ensemble of St. Petersburg and the place of detention of political prisoners. The tour also includes a visit to the Peter and Paul Cathedral – a remarkable architectural monument of the Peter’s Baroque, with the tombs of Russian emperors from Peter I to Nicholas II, and the prison of Trubeckoy bastion – the last political prison in the fortress.

St. Isaac's Cathedral (walking tour)

St. Isaac Cathedral was originally the city’s main church and the largest cathedral in Russia. It was built between 1818 and 1858 by the French- born architect Auguste Montferrand,  and became one of the most impressive landmarks of Russian Imperial capital. One hundred and eighty years later the guilded dome of St. Isaac’s still dominates the skyline of St. Petersburg.

You will have an opportunity to climb the 262 steps to the colonnade around the drum of the dome, and enjoy superb city views.

Neva boat river tour (1.5 h)

Built over 42 islands, St. Petersburg is surrounded by water and interlaced with a complex web of rivers, canals and channels both binding the city together and marking the borders of its different districts and neighbourhoods. St. Petersburg’s low-rise classical architecture means that great vistas of the city are often visible from the water, and therefore an essential part of any exploration of the city is to get out in a boat and cruise the rivers and canals of St. Petersburg. Enjoy spectacular views of the city.

Church on Spilled Blood

Church on Spilled Blood – or even just the Church on the Blood – as it marks the spot where Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded in an assassination attempt on March 1, 1881. Designed by Alfred Parland in the style of 16th and 17th-century Russian churches, the Church of the Resurrection provides a stark (some would say jarring) contrast to its surroundings of Baroque, Classical and Modernist architecture.

Excursion to Pavlovsk Imperial Palace – Built in the late XVIII and early XIX centuries, the palace and park were used as a summer residence for Emperor Paul I and his family. The landscape park, one of the largest in Europe, covers an area of 600 hectares. The museum in the palace displays an excellent collection of portraits by Russian artists and a number of Pavlovsk landscape paintings and drawings. Residential rooms of the Empress Maria Fedorovna are enrapturing with their harmonious beauty and are open the public.
